Participating Grade 3 (and Grade 3 split) classes prepare to sing four short selections in concert with the TBSO. Printed and recorded versions of the music are provided to the teachers in advance. French, English and Indigenous folk songs are included in the program. In-school coaching sessions are done by classroom and music teachers with the help of one school visit by the TBSO’s Conductor in Residence.

In order to accommodate the large number of classes typically interested in participating, each school is scheduled to perform at one of the two 7 PM concerts and parents are encouraged to attend. Concert performance dates will be Thursday November 19 and Friday November 20 2018. The morning of the concert, students convene at the concert location for a dress rehearsal with the TBSO. Each small group (1 to 3 classes) sings the two special folk songs which they have prepared. All participants combine to perform The Spirit Bear Song in Ojibwe and Beethoven’s Ode to Joy en masse.

Travel: Participating schools will be responsible for busing students to the concert location facility for the morning rehearsal.

Invoicing of your school will follow the concerts.

Registration is required.

Link Up: The Orchestra Moves

This will be the TBSO’s sixth year bringing the Link Up program to the students of Thunder Bay. For 2018-19, Thunder Bay’s Grades 4-6 students will have the opportunity to participate in the ‘The Orchestra Moves’ program.

Dates:  Monday, April 15 or Tuesday, April 16, 2019

Cost: $90+HST ($101.70) per class.

This will be the TBSO’s sixth year bringing the Link Up program to the students of Thunder Bay. For 2018-19, Thunder Bay’s Grades 4-6 students will have the opportunity to participate in the ‘The Orchestra Moves’ program. By any definition, music moves. Melody, rhythm, and harmony all change, shift, and develop. When an orchestra plays for us, we may notice more than one kind of movement. On the outside, we can hear sounds move as the musicians change their pitches, rhythms, and dynamics. We can see the musicians’ bodies move as they play. On the inside, we may feel our emotions moving and changing in response to the music we hear. Sometimes music might even create a sense of physical movement as sounds become heavier or lighter, rise up or tumble down. Through the Link Up repertoire, hands-on activities, and a culminating interactive performance with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra we will discover how the orchestra moves.

Link Up is a program developed by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute in New York. During the 2018-19 season, the program will be shared with more than 100 partner orchestras in Canada, the U.S., Spain, Japan, Brazil, and Kenya. Link Up pairs orchestras with students in Grades 4-6 in their local communities to explore orchestra repertoire through a hands-on music curriculum. Students participating in Link Up attend a culminating concert, in which they sing and play recorders with the orchestra from their seats. Schools will receive the Link Up curriculum guide for each teacher, workbooks for each student, and access to Carnegie Hall’s online resources and Link Up Facebook group. There are 4 different Link Up programs – The Orchestra Sings, The Orchestra Rocks, the Orchestra Moves and the Orchestra Swings – each presented in yearly cycles.

Invoicing of your school will follow the concerts.

Where: Thunder Bay Community Auditorium
