Amy Beach: Theme and Variations Op. 80 for flute and strings
Penelope Clarke, flute; Adora Wong & Michelle Zapf-Belanger, violins; Geena Salway, viola; Dan Parker, cello
Ernst von Dohnányi: Sextet, Op. 37
Peter Shackleton, clarinet; Janelle Wiebe, horn, Thomas Cosbey, violin; Marlena Pellegrino, viola; Peter Cosbey, cello and Tina Faye, piano
We explore the music of two outsiders – immensely talented as performers with musical legacies worthy of discovery. Beach’s hauntingly beautiful Theme has seven exquisite Variations blending flute and strings in different characters and moods. Hungarian born Dohnányi wrote his Sextet for winds, strings and piano in the tradition of Brahms, although in a music idiom all his own – boldly dramatic with unexpected twists.
