Welcome to Season 60 – Still Shining

As we move into our 2021-22 season, we are working on a number of new and exciting ways to stay connected to the wonderful virtual audiences we performed for in our 2020-2021 season. As part of that, we have developed a digital subscription that will enable anyone to watch our concerts from their homes – both near and far.

For a one-time contribution of $50 you will receive a link that enables you to access all of our concerts from October to December, virtually.

October 31 – Having a Lark

Thomas Cosbey, violin | Paul Haas, conducting

Our first concert with the full orchestra together since March of 2020! The evening opens with the TBSO players celebrating one of J.S Bach’s most famous and beloved works, Brandenburg Concerto No. 1. Then soloist and TBSO concertmaster Thomas Cosbey literally soars in Vaughan Williams’ mesmerizing A Lark Ascending. The evening closes with Mozart’s “Linzer” Symphony for chamber orchestra, a later work that is full of the grace and energy that define his style.

November 14 – Breakout!

Nancy Freeborn, vocals | Danny Johnson, piano and guitar | Jeff Christmas, conducting

The TBSO is featuring Thunder Bay’s very own Nancy Freeborn in a celebratory welcome back to our Northern Lights concerts! Nancy and her band join the TBSO to present some of the most powerful songs in pop music. Anyone who has seen Nancy perform knows how extraordinary her vocal range and on-stage charisma is. Join us for an incredible night featuring the music of Sia, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin….and more!

November 28 – Good Vibrations

Patrick Horn, viola | TBS Chorus | Paul Haas, conducting

Join us as we begin a four-year journey to explore the rarely-performed C.P.E. Bach (J.S. Bach’s son) symphonies, two-and-a-half centuries. Next, the TBS Chorus brings glory and grandeur to Handel’s Coronation Anthems. Then Paul Haas’ Souflé van takes us on an otherworldly trip through Creole song, featuring violist Patrick Horn. Haydn’s immortal Symphony no. 101, “The Clock”, brings the concert to a close in an explosive rush!

December 12 – Something in the Air

Madonna Lee, violin | Dina Gilbert, conducting

Celebrate Madonna Lee’s 25 years in the TBSO by hearing her soar in the lyrical violin concerto by Irish composer Ina Boyle! We open the concert with an overture by Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn, followed by Laryssa Kuzmenko’s lovely Prayer. Next, we hear the languorous Suite en forme de valses by Mélanie “Mel” Bonis, and Sinfonia by Marianna Martines. Grażyna Bacewicz’s bold Concerto for String Orchestra caps the evening in style!

December 19 – Northern Ghost

Nick Sherman, vocals and guitar | Janna Sailor, conducting

The TBSO welcomes back the talented singer-songwriter, Nick Sherman in this Northern Lights concert. If you’ve heard Sherman sing before, you’re familiar with his velvety voice and original music. Join us for a night full of music you won’t soon forget.
