TBSO Resident Conductor (RC) Contract Position Overview*
The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra’s Resident Conductor position (formerly Conductor-in-Residence) was created a number of years ago to provide a unique professional development opportunity for emerging conductors, and to provide essential support to the Music Director, the musicians and administration. The successful RC will be an independent contractor with a set base salary in the range of $30,000 per annum, paid in twice monthly increments, for a term of between one and three years.
The RC will work collaboratively with the administrative team on all matters pertaining to the operations of the Association.
It is required that the RC reside in Thunder Bay during the term of the contract, and it is required that the RC attend all rehearsals and concerts conducted by the Music Director or Guest Conductors. The RC will provide notes, balance feedback and other information as required.
While the TBSO’s concert season commences in September, and ends no later than May 8th, significant preparatory work (submitted and approved programs) will be required during those months in which the Orchestra does not perform services (May through September). The RC must be available for all planning meetings, auditions, staff meetings and other administrative work as directed by both the Music Director and the Executive Director.
The RC will be assigned, rehearse and conduct over 25 TBSO concerts annually, under the mentorship of the Music Director.
The RC will accompany the TBSO on two regional tours annually, and conduct a number of touring concerts as determined by the Music Director and administration.
In cooperation with TBSO administration and under the direction of the Music Director, the RC will create and prepare Education, Engagement and other programs as assigned. The role of the RC in education has grown over the past few years into a robust program encompassing Musicians in Classrooms, Side by Side concerts, Grade 3 Sing-Alongs and delivering the Carnegie Hall Link Up program. TBSO education programs reach over 6500 students in the region annually.
The RC will serve as Chorus Master for the Thunder Bay Symphony Chorus. Rehearsals shall be held every Wednesday starting in September and ending after the last performance of the Thunder Bay Symphony Chorus with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.
The RC will conduct one or more of TBSO’s special fundraising concert events annually.
The RC will participate in and contribute to the annual planning of the upcoming season’s artistic program with the Music Director and Artistic Advisory Committee.
The RC will represent the TBSO in the community to support, maintain and enhance its professional, artistic and community-building image.
The RC will provide all administrative work related to the contract in accordance with deadlines established by the Association and/or the union Master Agreement.
TBSO’s Music Director will provide artistic mentorship, and Executive Director and other staff will provide administrative mentorship to the RC.
From time to time, the RC may accept additional employment outside the Association. The RC must secure a release in writing for any dates for outside employment of the Association from the Executive Director.
Additional financial assistance may be available for travel for professional development.
